Like songbirds, we are creatures who are inclined to sing. We were created with this proclivity to sing out praises and God’s people have it in their new nature to sing out praises to the God who rescued them.

The Greatest of Christian Duties #6
This is part 6 of our devotionals on John Flavel’s book, Keeping the Heart, and what an amazing study it has been! Flavel has been laying bare the importance of keeping the heart. In essence, the heart refers to the decision-making and will (not the seat of the emotions). It is the fountain of all our thought and action. Behaviour emerges from the heart. The heart is also what God looks at when He is assessing our faithfulness, and it is with the heart alone that we can come to love and glorify God. What does that mean?
The Greatest of Christian Duties #5
We are continuing our points today on why Christians must make keeping their hearts “the great business of their lives.” Last time, we looked at how keeping our hearts is directly correlated with glorifying God, and how living a life of hypocrisy—where there is no evidence of heart change—is its opposite (like the sin of murder or treason).
The Greatest of Christian Duties #4
We have been looking at the place of the heart in the Christian life. Last time, we looked at six principles for keeping the heart (the heart represents our decision-making and will) focused on God. If you have not read the first three devotionals (or if you need review), please go back and read them. This is an essential subject for the believer to understand and practice. Today we will be looking at the first two reasons why Christians must make keeping the heart fixed on God “the great business of their lives.”
The Greatest of Christian Duties #3
Last time, we looked at Flavel’s explanation of Proverbs 4:23, “Keep thy heart with all diligence. For out of it are the issues of life.” He explained that keeping the heart is the chief duty of the believer, and what the heart is from the Bible (the heart pertains to the decision-making and will). Today we will be looking at six principles that we need to know for keeping the heart fixed upon God.
