Given that the writer of Hebrews has launched so vigorously into his examination of Jesus as the ultimate high-priest in the previous verses, and that he has now mentioned the name Melchizedek, it would be natural to expect him to continue to expound upon his point immediately.

The Son’s high priesthood is now a clear focus for much of the middle portion of the book of Hebrews and the author continues to draw parallels from Israel’s history with his explanation of the new and better covenant that was created through the Son.

Here in Hebrews 4:14-16, the author begins his consideration of Christ’s high priesthood, a vitally important theological motif that extends with vigor all the way to Hebrews 10:25.

As we continue in our study of Hebrews it is good to take a moment and remember that this letter was most likely originally delivered as a sermon to an audience of persecuted and spiritually-fatigued believers. The author is working hard to rouse his hearers from lethargy through a pronouncement of the person and work of Jesus. Keeping this in mind is important as we interact with Hebrews 2:5-9.
